Facts About Mars, Hot Interesting
Trivia & Fun Girls
And now some
fun facts about the planet
Mars:
-
Mars
may be only half the size of Earth, but it does
have tremendous features. For example, Mars has the
largest volcano in the largest entirety of the
solar system. It’s called Olympus Mon and it
rises to about twice the size of Mount
Everest.
-
Why is
Mars a red planet? Well that’s because of the
significant amount of iron oxide in the
soil on Mars. In Leman’s terms, iron oxide is rust,
so Mars is essentially covered in
rust.
-
Carrying out missions to Mars
turned out to be a lot more complicated that we had
thought. In fact, only about 1/3 of the missions we
carry out to Mars are successful.
-
Life
on Mars? Some people think so. In the 1970’s The
Viking orbiter took pictured of the surface of
Mars. These pictures showed what seemed to be large
faces and pyramids carved into the surface of Mars.
This area is called Fadonia.
-
Mars
has some of the craziest weather of all the planets
in the solar system. It has storms ranging from dust
storms, to wind storms, to tornados.
-
In
facts, in 2001, it had such a large dust storm that
it covered the whole planet for a few Earth days.
Now this baffles scientists because Mars is such a
small planet and has such little atmosphere that it
shouldn’t be having storms of this magnitude.
However, they have noticed that the closer Mars is
to the sun, the more storms that it
has.
-
The
tilt of the Earth’s axis is 23.5 degrees, and the
tilt of Mar’s axis is 25.2 degrees. Now because of
the similarities in tilts, both Mars and Earth have
seasons.
-
Mars
makes a complete rotation around the Earth every
687 days. So a Martian year is about twice as long
as an Earth year. That means if you were seventy on
Earth, your Martian counterpart would be thirty
five.
-
Mars
seems to be a pretty dead planet now, however,
scientist believe that Mars used to be much like
Earth and that it even had running water and
lakes.
