10 Interesting Facts About Mars

Mars is nicknamed the red planet. Because of the
color reminding people of blood, they named Mars
after the roman god of war.

Mars has two moons, but because of their irregular
shape, scientists think that they might also be
asteroids just stuck in the gravitational pull of
Mars.

Mars’s moons have interesting names. One moon is
called Fobos, which means fear, and the other moon
is called Demos, which means panic.

Because Mars is so close to Earth in the solar
system, it looks very big in our night sky,
however, Mars is one of the smaller planets in the
solar system. In fact, it is only about half the
size as Earth.

You know how scientists tend to name things with
long and confusing words that most people don’t
understand? Well the scientists who studied Mars
tried to do something different. They actually
named some of the rocks on the surface of Mars some
interesting names that they thought would be easy
to remember. For instance, amongst others there was
cabbage patch, pop tart, half dome, shark, stimbi,
and yogi - pretty easy names and pretty fun
too.

You know that famous face on Mars? Well that thing
is actually huge. It rises up about 2,000 feet
above the surface and it stretches for
miles.

You know how there’s a magnetic field around Earth?
Well Mars does not have one. Now scientists believe
that Mars used to have one, but now it is
gone.

Mars is generally a very cold planet. It can get to
temperatures as low as below 193 degrees below 0
and it only gets to temperatures up to 77 degrees
Fahrenheit. So if you’re going to Mars, you better
pack a jacket.

One of the two moons that are rotating around Mars
is slowly loosing its altitude during its orbit.
Scientist believe that that moon will eventually
crash into the surface of Mars.

There’s been a debate on whether or not there is
water on Mars, but recently scientists have
discovered water. In fact, there is so much water
under the surface of Mars that it can fill Lake
Michigan twice.
